Michinoku Coastal Trail Featured in Condé Nast Traveler
Condé Nast Traveler has featured the Michinoku Coastal Trail as part of a journey through Japan’s Tohoku region.
The feature, “Hiking Through the Misty Forests and Seaside Vistas of Tohoku, Japan,” takes the writer from Oirase and Lake Towada down to the Sanriku Coast, including several days hiking the Michinoku Coastal Trail.
The article covers some of the things that make this part of the trail so memorable: dramatic Pacific coastline, forests, small fishing communities, local food, onsen and some pretty challenging sections of trail.
The MCT section includes Kitayamazaki and Tanohata in Iwate, with sea caves, steep steps, ladders, forests and isolated coves along the way.
It also touches on an important part of the trail’s story: the communities affected by the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake and tsunami, and what it means to travel through this coastline today.
It’s great to see the MCT getting more international attention, particularly as more people start looking beyond Japan’s better-known hiking routes and destinations.
If you’re thinking about walking the trail yourself, you can explore routes and practical planning guides here on MichinokuTrail.com.
