Michinoku Trail Tours, Kamaishi

Michinoku Coastal Trail Tours & Guided Experiences

Guided hikes, self-guided walking trips and local experiences along Japan's Michinoku Coastal Trail.

You don't need a guide to walk the Michinoku Coastal Trail. Many hikers travel independently, and much of this website is designed to help you do exactly that.

But if you'd rather have someone organise accommodation, luggage transfers and transport, there are now several companies offering guided and self-guided MCT trips. You can also add shorter guided hikes, outdoor activities, food tours and cultural experiences to an independently planned journey.

Here's an overview of the main options.

Guided & Self-Guided Michinoku Coastal Trail Tours

A self-guided tour generally means you walk independently, while accommodation and some or all of your luggage transfers, taxis and other logistics are organised in advance.

A guided tour normally includes an English-speaking guide, a structured itinerary and more opportunities to learn about the landscapes and communities you're walking through.

There are both Tohoku-based operators and larger international walking companies. Compare the actual route, daily walking distances and level of support rather than simply choosing by trip length.

Shorter 3-Day MCT Packages on Viator

If you'd prefer a shorter, fully arranged introduction to the trail rather than a longer walking holiday, Viator currently lists two 3-day MCT packages. I haven't personally taken either, and both are premium-priced, so check the latest itinerary, reviews, inclusions and cancellation terms carefully before booking.

Affiliate disclosure: The two Viator links below are affiliate links. I may earn a small commission at no cost to you.

Northern MCT: Fudai, Tanohata & Miyako

A 3-day guided trip through one of the MCT's most dramatic northern sections, with accommodation, local transport and meals included in the current itinerary.

Best for: A short organised taste of northern Iwate.

Southern MCT: Soma, Natori & Matsushima

A 3-day guided itinerary covering the southern MCT, including places connected to the coast's landscape, communities and the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake.

Best for: A short organised introduction to the southern trail.

Prefer a lighter touch?

If you don't want a full tour package but would still like some support, the Natori Trail Center in Miyagi is the trail's main information hub and can help with local information and logistics such as boat reservations.

Guided Experiences to Add to an Independent MCT Trip

If you're organising the MCT yourself, you can still add a local guide or activity for a day. The experiences below are ones I think are particularly relevant to MCT travellers, whether you want more local context, help reaching a remote section, or simply a change from hiking.

I haven't personally taken every tour below, so these aren't presented as tested recommendations. I've chosen them for their location, relevance to the trail and, where available, traveller feedback.

Affiliate disclosure: Viator links below are affiliate links. I may earn a small commission at no cost to you. A few local experiences link directly to the operator instead; those aren't affiliate links.

Sappa Boat Adventure, Tanohata

Best for: A short, distinctive detour onto the water

A sappa is the small boat local fishermen use for sea urchin, abalone and coastal fishing. An experienced local fisherman takes you through the gaps and beneath the cliffs around Tanohata, on routes fishermen have worked for generations. It's one of the more distinctive ways to see the coastline you're walking.

Taiko Drum Workshop, Miyako

Best for: Culture, meeting local people, a rest-day or evening activity

Join a practice session with Yamaguchi Taiko no Kai, one of Miyako's local taiko groups. Learn basic techniques, try playing the drums yourself, then watch the group perform up close.

It's a good way to add a local cultural experience to an MCT trip, especially if you're spending a night in Miyako.

Hike to Todogasaki, Japan's Easternmost Point

Best for: Exploring a remote MCT landmark with a local guide

Todogasaki is the easternmost point of mainland Japan, on the Omoe Peninsula southeast of central Miyako. The tour follows the trail towards Todogasaki Lighthouse with a local guide.

If you're already walking this section as part of a longer MCT trip, you can visit independently. The guided option is more useful if you'd like local interpretation or help with the logistics.

SUP & Sea Kayaking at Nebama, Kamaishi

Best for: A change of pace near Unosumai

DurationAround 3 hours
Price¥6,500 per person, including equipment and insurance

Food & Culture Along the Trail

Some of the most memorable parts of travelling the MCT happen away from the walking itself. If you have an easier day or an extra night somewhere, these experiences offer another way to connect with the food, history and communities of Tohoku.

Rikuzentakata Gastronomy Experience

Best for: Food lovers wanting a deeper local experience

Rikuzentakata is directly on the MCT. This premium gastronomy experience focuses on local food, producers and the Sanriku Coast's food culture, with a level of access that's hard to arrange independently.

It's considerably more expensive than eating out and doesn't yet have much review history, so I'm including it mainly for its strong connection to the trail and local community.

Sake Brewery Tour at Otokoyama Honten, Kesennuma

Best for: Sake, local food culture, a rest-day activity

Step inside Otokoyama Honten, a Kesennuma sake brewery producing sake since 1912. The tour covers the brewing process and the brewery's story, while its best-known label, Sotenden, has won awards in Japan and overseas.

It's an easy cultural stop to add while spending time in Kesennuma, particularly if you want something beyond hiking and seafood.

DurationAround 60 minutes
Price¥1,100 per person
LocationOtokoyama Honten, Kesennuma
WhenGenerally year-round, except Tuesdays and dates when brewing operations prevent visits

Before or After the Trail

Continue South to the Fukushima Coastal Trail

The MCT doesn't have to be the end of your coastal journey. The Fukushima Coastal Trail is a sister trail to the Michinoku Coastal Trail, continuing the idea of exploring Tohoku's Pacific coast on foot.

If you're travelling south after the MCT, you could continue into coastal Fukushima rather than heading directly back towards Tokyo.

Iwaki is on the Fukushima Coastal Trail, making the following tour particularly relevant to hikers building a longer coastal itinerary.

Before Booking

Check the meeting point, transport, what's included, difficulty, minimum numbers and cancellation conditions. Tour details, prices and ratings change, so confirm the latest information with the operator before booking.
